DESERT DUNS HORSE ASSOCIATION

A Stolen Utah Prince
by Adela (& Steve) Maxfield

Steve & I were living in Tooele, Utah in 2001. There was a knock at the door, a fellow introduced himself as Mr. Horse Thief. He heard we had some mustangs for sale. (Webmasters notice: Can't use Mr. Horse Thief's real name, I don't want to be sued, even though the events are true!) He explained how he was in the process of breaking horses for other people and would be willing to break our stallion Prince and his son Charm, in trade for the grulla pony mare, named Bailey and her half Sulphur filly, sired by Prince.  On May 6th, Mr. Horse Thief and one of his friends came and they loaded up our mare and her filly. Then ten days later, Mr. Horse Thief came to get Prince, but he left Charm as he wasn't old enough to break yet, but promised to break him the following year. Mr. Horse Thief told us that it usually takes him a month to break a horse, so we figured we would hear back from him in June.

Mr. Horse Thief was supposed to meet with us on several occasions at the South Jordan Equestrian Center, which was near his house, to show us how Prince was coming along, but Mr. Horse Thief always had his fiancé call at the last minute with an excuse as to why he couldn't meet us. Even more disconcerting was the fact that he was always changing his story as to where Prince was.  When he didn't return our calls, we went looking for him. Mr. Horse Thief had moved, his phone was disconnected and no forwarding address. We decide to go to the South Jordan Equestrian Center to see if Prince was there? We asked the manager if Mr. Horse Thief was renting any of their stalls.  She told us, yes, he had horses there. We found a skinny Prince in one of the stalls. He had bite marks all over him and a horseshoe hoof print on his ribs. Mr. Horse Thief was using Prince to breed and Prince definitely wasn't broke! While we were standing there, a man started talking to us, he said Mr. Horse Thief owed the county money, so they put a lock on his stalls. Police reports are on file in South Jordan, Utah.   When we got home, we just wanted the whole night mare to end, we had been so traumatized by the whole event with Mr. Horse Thief, we decide to sell Prince. Several months before Prince's abduction, Chuck and Judy Cubel, had told us, that if ever decided to sell Prince, to let them know. Chuck and his daughter Mary, met Steve (and Prince) in St. George, Utah, the weekend after Thanksgiving.   The story continues as Prince moves to Arizona.
